I visited the Ringling School last week, they were extremely helpful, gave me a tour and discussed some of the same problems that we face here in NJ. They definitely have a different approach and seem to get as much or more from their staff as they do from their faculty.

I was at Kean University last week. It's a curious place and it is amazing what you can learn by wandering the art building and talking to anyone you meet. I have to admit there is no substitute for an in-person visit and keeping in mind what you don't want to do as opposed to what you want to do. It is a necessity when you vistit other institutions to resist temptation!

So my wife drops me off by the Ottauquechee River while she shops. I plug in the IPOD and I'm watching the fish rise. All is right in the world and it starts to rain. OK, I think, I can tolerate this till she comes back for me. then out of nowhere this guy appears and hands me a golf umbrella. He says, "Take this!" and leaves me - refusing to accept anything in exchange. I'm on a mission now, I figure the umbrella must get passed on.

My mom is so very upset by the passing of Tim Russert. (Seen here with my brother and mother) She got to meet him in April. I have to admit I didn't know much about the man but I'm impressed by the overwhelming response to his passing. Not just in the media, but in government, his hometown and even in sports. I get the impression that he was a guy who loved life, loved what he was doing. There is a lesson in here somewhere.

I find myself reading my "Bergen" mail and cannot help but reflect on my history with this place. As a student, staff member and more recently faculty member. I often see people who have had life-long or life-altering relationships with institutions. Ask someone who went to the University of Ohio or OSU about their experience and they light up. It's like you asked them about their family and they beam with pride.

Ask someone about BCC and usually they just smile, but it's a knowing smile. So yes, I'm smiling this morning.

This year’s exhibit will be held once again at the James Howe Gallery in the Vaughn Eames Hall of Kean University in Union, NJ. I photographed with my friend Liuva yesterday, it was a great dialogue with a camera present. She validated a lot of my thoughts about what I do. I've a bad habit of not explaining myself fully to my subjects. We spoke of the relationship between photographer and subject, collaboration, performance and the ability to step outside oneself if only for a few hours. I do regret one thing; that I can't spend more time with the people I photograph or get closer to them. I read about photographers who spend days, weeks, months with their subjects with a certain amount of jealousy.

Culture Clash on Stag Hill

Tensions are elevated here on the mountain. (No pun intended)
Tragically there was a shooting involving State authorities who were attempting to enforce laws on the use of all-terrain-vehicles on state land. The ATV being a part of one culture, the application of law equally to everyone being a part of another culture.
I hope this comes to a common sense and just resolution without further bloodshed.
