Rapid I movement...
I want to do more.
I want the day to be longer.
I want the weekend to be especially longer.
I want to get around to making the images that I want to make.
I want to master Microsoft Power Point.
I want to see peace.
I want to direct. (I'm just kidding)
I want to get to the Tribeca Film Festival.
I want to hear music.
I want to stop working for a living.
I want to spend more time with you.
I want to keep learning.
I want to show you something.
I want the day to be longer.

Rudeness
I never cease to be amazed by the rudeness of my colleagues. I say rudeness knowing that there is a perception or stereotypical notion that a certain amount of academia is perceived as being "eccentric." There is a distinct line between eccentric and being rude. Freud would attribute it to ego or superego. Whatever it's source there must be a cure. The reaction of students, staff and others is the universal. At least my colleagues are consistent! And when the students and staff validate your observations you can manage to grin, shake your head and move on confident in the belief that sooner or later it will come back to haunt them.
There is something to be be learned from the inconsiderate in a round-a-bout way. Exactly how not to conduct your life. In the words of Morgan Freeman in Bonfire of the Vanities; "Be polite!"
"Be decent!"

Monday on Maple Road
5 Maple road is looking really good right about now. Warm, fireplace is roaring, bright and I smell chili on the stove. This weather has given me pause to think that I'm where I should be.
Good decisions, good friends, life is good.
I'm less concerned about getting buried in snow than I am about being buried by work. I want to shoot on a much more regular basis. Less work, more fun!
Mission of mercy tonight - drop off a shovel and a bucket of chili to Melissa B. No, she won't eat with the shovel, but I'm sure it will warm her up after she digs out her car.
Busy week upcoming including a visit to the good doctor. Looking forward to class on Tuesday. I am making one adjustment in my schedule. I used to do it when I was a lab assistant. Avoid a select few who have the habit of making things so much more difficult. I used to be pretty good at it. An acquired skill it takes patience aforethought. I'm already keeping a low profile. My friend from Public Safety - Joe Broking, (A retired lieutenant from Cliffiside) accused me of being invisible the other day. Not like the old days Joe, see you under the radar!

From Kiki B
Hi Mark, To answer one question... King George got the money for his inauguration from Washington's Home Land Security Fund. Your photos are warm and beautiful on and this darn cold day it is sorely needed. Is the title of your last portrait Warmer or Warner (as in Bra's)?Is this the way to answer a Blog? If not, head me in the right direction. I'll read you often but not necessarily answer. Can I send one of my art works for viewing? I won't be insulted if you say no. If you say yes, I'll have to figure out how to send it. With digital photography taking over, how will it affect your classes? Talk to you soon Kiki
K,
Thank you, I'm still ironing out the bugs in this blog thing, so bear with me.
And I'm not sure about my friend's choice in lingerie but I am sure it sends me to a warmer time.
I welcome sending images to be posted. Send them early and often!
As for changes in the medium, I am keeping up with the technology. I'm affected more by the politics of the institution than I am by changes in the creative process. The medium can change, the faculty/administration can change, but the act of teaching, regardless of innovation, remains the same.
Warmest regards to you and Ed,
Mark

From Susan
Susan has sent you a link to a weblog: There is no justification for the expense, extravagance and spectacle of the whole thing. But of course, there has not been justification for many actions taken by this administration. On a more positive note, I like your blog, Mark. Keep on postin'!!

Hibernation
If I wasn't so inspired I'd want to hibernate. But there will be no hibernation for this bear. Unlike Yogi, I'm not smarter than the average bear and thus I will be working through this storm tonight. How much snow can fall in 12 hours?
There is something quieting about the snow. So, in a way I'm looking forward to it, anticipating it. It even gets the phones to stop ringing. Not that they ring much on the graveyard shift. And the cops are quiet as bad guys don't come out in the snow. In the old days, when I was in West New York, the chief would cook pasta for us and call us in off the road. Those were warm times. I miss that guy. Be a good opportunity to read. I'm reading Weston's day books. My mind keeps drifting to making images. Hope you don't get cabin fever. You know where to find me. Send some warm thoughts!

I'm awash in e-mail. But it's OK, much of it is good. In fact a couple of them made my day. My students are starting to log into the course. Today is only day 2 of their semester. I have to laugh, no snow days for on-line students or me for that matter. No holidays, no nothing!
This should be a fun semester and a real learning experience for all concerned.
New tires and windshield wipers, I feel unstoppable. It feels a bit odd putting new tires on a vehicle with 195,000 miles, call me an optimist. We will see when the Nor-Easter gets here tomorrow.
Plenty of firewood, chili and things to do should we get snowed in.
I'm really motivated to make some images. Join me huh?
They say it cost almost 40 million for the inauguration today. How does anyone justify that?

Blogging - From Kelly Keane
Mark,
Your blog was really great. I like the fact that as a "student" or a viewer, I get to know you better - especially the creative side. I miss being able to show my students how I really create. Perhaps this would be a good reason to have a link to my blog, so that they can see what I do when I struggle with words, which is all of the time. I also like it because it is so far away from a type of graded material. Another thought would be to have my reading response journal somehow incorporated into this. Plenty to think about here.
Thanks for your creativity; it inspires me.
Kelly

Cloning
Yes, I was in three places last night. Got in and out of the BCC adjunct conference in record time. There were some unhappy faces there. I'm guessing there was some canceled classes and bumping going on. But dinner was decent, the speeches brief and the meeting, well it wasn't really a meeting. Hardly anything was said which I guess is OK. A lot of people not in attendance but they did not miss a thing!
Flew out the door, sped on Rt. 208, (Badge Americard - Don't leave home without it) to Susan Hammond's thesis reception. I felt bad that I could not stay, made a whirl-wind tour of the gallery, congratulated Susan, suggested to her husband (G-man) that we go blow something up, (It's what he does for a living) said hello to as many people as I could manage and out the door I went.
Next stop Digital Imaging class with Michael Zweibel. I just caught him before he left and spent a few minutes apologizing about being so late. Nonetheless I think this will be a great class with so much to master. I saw Angela DeLaura while I was there and she accused me of being a rabble-rouser. Is that really a word? And am I a rabble-rouser? I'm not sure what she means by that. But it will be good to see her every Tuesday.

Jet Fans
It has been a couple days now. And reality is starting to set in for the unhappy tenants of GIANTS Stadium. For those of them who can't read, someone by now has explained to them several times, (Real slow) once again, they have fallen short. Well, let the moaning begin, the whining and cheap excuses need to get done. Get it out of your system, then get out of our house!
And you always have the Rangers to cheer for. Doh! No Hockey???
Yes, move to the West side, sit with your pal Bloomberg, enjoy the Hudson at low tide!
Toll 7 bucks, traffic
Parking and beer - you got that
See Jets lose - priceless!

MLK Day
MLK had a dream, a very focused one. I sometimes wonder about my dreams. Nothing profound, sometimes in black & white others not. In my dreams there is no guilt. And people in them tend to slip in and out of character. The dreams are often recurring but with different characters. I embrace the dreams, they are such a source of imagery. I need more sleep, more REM. See you there!
I drove past my old residence today. And I found myself looking for someone. There used to be this woman who for about a year or two would roller-blade past the house every day. 8:00 AM like clockwork. She was remarkable in appearance. Tall, long limbed and always aerodynamic in appearance. Rain or shine she would glide by with incredible grace and economy of effort. She would make the turn at Williams Avenue and accelerate. So smooth, so effortless. I wanted to photograph her but was unwilling to "steal" her image. I would look for her and wait for the opportunity to approach her. Not likely to occur anytime soon. But when I drive by, I will look.
I'm still mourning Avedon. I found this quote I wish to share with you.
"I've worked out a series of no's. No to exquisite light, no to apparent compositions, no to the seduction of poses or narrative, And all these no's force me to the "Yes." I have the white background. I have the person I'm interested in and the thing happens between us." - Richard Avedon 1923-2004

Right Now...
I'm in a shooting kind of mode, edgy stuff... I'm looking to take advantage of those rare oportunities... time to update the website too.
But this w*** thing keeps getting in the way. Peggy better win the lottery soon.
Don't you hate the "W" word? I don't hate my job and I am amazed at how much they pay me.
My employers have been really good to me. Actually it is just the time consumed, not the work.
The rotating days off make scheduling a challenge. I do wish I liked this work. I'ts not like teaching.
Oh to be the country gentleman!

Images
Well, it took me an hour to figure this out but I've posted some images here. Nothing too provocative yet. I will next figure out how to allow you to post images and the like here. Hopefully it won't take you as long as it did I.
I'm kind of inspired. This usually happens at the beginning of a semester. I want to spend the next few weeks experimenting. Let me know what you think of the images. I'm already seeing all kinds of uses for this blog thing.
