Rudeness

I never cease to be amazed by the rudeness of my colleagues. I say rudeness knowing that there is a perception or stereotypical notion that a certain amount of academia is perceived as being "eccentric." There is a distinct line between eccentric and being rude. Freud would attribute it to ego or superego. Whatever it's source there must be a cure. The reaction of students, staff and others is the universal. At least my colleagues are consistent! And when the students and staff validate your observations you can manage to grin, shake your head and move on confident in the belief that sooner or later it will come back to haunt them.
There is something to be be learned from the inconsiderate in a round-a-bout way. Exactly how not to conduct your life. In the words of Morgan Freeman in Bonfire of the Vanities; "Be polite!"
"Be decent!"
